These courses not only look good on a resume, but
actually increase the students ability to respond to common aquatic or
diving accidents. Guests can train for a few hours in the evenings
after day work and satisfy their refresher course requirements or earn
their initial certifications in Primary Care (CPR), Secondary Care
(First Aid) or Care for Children through Emergency First Response
Corporation (EFR). Similarly, they can satisfy their refresher course
requirements or earn their initial certification in the various DAN
courses in aquatic and scuba diving safety.
The EFR classes utilize independent study with skill development and
scenario practice with an instructor. They follow the same care
priorities used by paramedics and the protocols from the consensus view
of the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR). The
Primary Care course covers emergency care for most life-threatening
situations and focuses on the ABCD’s of primary care. The Secondary
Care course assumes that the student will need to also provide
secondary care or first aid, and covers injury and illness assessment,
bandaging, and splinting for dislocations and fractures. The Emergency
Care for Children course focuses and the appropriate Primary and
Secondary care for small children or infants. These courses anticipate
that the student will spend approximately 4 hours in independent study
preparing for a written final examination and another 4 hours
practicing skills under an instructor’s guidance.
The Divers Alert Network courses also anticipate that the student
will spend time in independent study or taking an online course for the
academic portion of the course. The time spent with an instructor will
be spent practicing skills or engaging in various scenarios designed to
afford the student an opportunity to analyze a problem as it is likely
to arise in real life. Cordova Diving offers the following DAN courses:
